Essex County Executive DiVincenzo Invites Children and Families to Participate in Annual Earth Day Celebration and Spring Break Nature Camp Roseland, NJ – A variety of programs are being offered at the Essex County Environmental Center during the month of April that will teach children and adults about nature and help them gain a greater appreciation and understanding of our environment. Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. pointed out that the Environmental Center’s 3rd Annual Earth Day Celebration and Spring Break Nature Camp are special opportunities for children and their families to learn about the environment. “Our Environmental Center has become the premiere location for environmental education and nature appreciation. With the help of our partner groups, our dynamic schedule of events and activities will captivate all ages,” DiVincenzo said. “Walk in our woods, discover habitats, get pointers on gardening, learn about nature photography and much more. It’s all about nature and it’s all at our Environmental Center,” he added. Events scheduled for April are as follows: “Become an Environmental Center Volunteer” will be hosted by the Environmental Center staff. Volunteer opportunities include office support, event planning and staffing, trail building and maintenance, program implementation and much more. This is appropriate for high school and college students and adults. This program is free. Become an Environmental Center Volunteer will be held as follows: Date: Thursday, April 10, 2008 Time: 7 p.m. Place: Essex County Environmental Center 621B Eagle Rock Avenue Roseland, NJ “Birding Hike In Essex County Branch Brook Park” will be hosted by the New Jersey Audubon Society. Visit this historic park at the peak of the Cherry Blossom bloom to look for early spring migrants. Cost is $6 for NJ Audubon Society members and $8 for non-members. Meet in the parking area near the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center. Birding Hike will be held as follows: Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008 Time: 8:30 a.m. Place: Essex County Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Welcome Center Newark, NJ “Spring Wreath-Making For Your Door or Table” will be presented by the Master Gardeners of Essex County. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn the basics of designing and arranging flowers to create a wonderful spring wreath or centerpiece. Fee is $20 and includes all materials. Spring Wreath-Making will be held as follows: Date: Friday, April 18, 2008 Time: 1 p.m. Place: Essex County Environmental Center 621B Eagle Rock Avenue Roseland, NJ “The 3rd Annual Earth Day Celebration” is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness about the Planet Earth. Join the Essex County Environmental Center and its Partner Agencies for a fun-filled day that includes a green vendor tent, canoeing, hikes, beekeeping demonstrations, refreshments and much more! This event is free. Earth Day Celebration will be held as follows: Date: Saturday, April 19, 2008 Time: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Place: Essex County Environmental Center 621B Eagle Rock Avenue Roseland, NJ “Spring Break Nature Camp” is a week-long spring break getaway at the Environmental Center that is geared for children in grades 3-5. Enjoy a full day learning about birds, reptiles and amphibians, outdoor skills, the Passaic River and much more. Sign up for each day or the entire week. Cost is $50 per day or $240 for the entire week. Spring Break Nature Camp will be held as follows: Dates: Monday, April 21 to Friday, April 25, 2008 Times: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Place: Essex County Environmental Center 621B Eagle Rock Avenue Roseland, NJ “Green Thumb Kids: Seed Starting” is part of an ongoing series to teach children the basics of gardening and planting. In this class, learn the basics on how to start and care for your seeds. It is appropriate for children ages 7 to 12. Cost is $5 per child per class. Green Thumb Kids will be held as follows: Date: Thursday, April 24, 2008 Time: 3:30 p.m. Place: Essex County Environmental Center 621B Eagle Rock Avenue Roseland, NJ “Woodturning Demonstration” will be presented by the NJ Woodturners Association. Enjoy a live wood turning demonstration and learn about different turning techniques. Cost is $7 per adult and free for NJWA members. The Park System consists of more than 6,000 acres and has 18 parks, five reservations, an environmental center, a zoo, ice skating rink, roller skating rink, three public golf courses, golf driving range, three off-leash dog facilities and a castle. The Cedar Grove Historical Society is holding its annual membership drive. Memberships are $15/person and $20/family Meetings are the fourth Wednesday. 7:30pm at the Cedar Grove Public Library. Forms are available at the library of at the Morgan Farm and Museum located at 903 Pompton Avenue. The museum is open Wednesday Mornings.
The first meeting of 2008 will be about the business of early Cedar Grove. Centennial souvenirs of hats, T-shirts, golf shirts, tote bags, and Images of Cedar Grove will also be available. The Thrift Shop of the Community Church of Cedar Grove will be open for business on Thursdays from 10am to 3pm and also Saturdays from 10am to Noon. Donations are accepted during shop hours. For more information, call 857-2762 during shop hours.
